The prerunoff bite is on and today felt great after a long cold winter. The sun was shining on the Gunnison and the fish seemed hungry. Being the first time I have fished this river I covered some ground to get the lay of the land. Waist deep snow and big chunks of ice made things a little difficult but it felt good to get the legs moving. I caught 12 fish about half rainbows and the other half browns. Average size was 14" but a few rainbows measured up to 16". A red and black copper john with a soft hackle and a midge dropper was very effective. I also picked up two browns while prospecting with streamers. Now I need to find the big tailouts where there might be a hog or two.
